Putt Away Cancer, founded by Marissa McKinnies, is an organization that believes in raising community awareness about the many needs of cancer patients. “My sister, Leilani Davis, was diagnosed by cancer,” Marissa explains. “I wanted to do something to honor her, because cancer is a terrible disease that wreaks havoc on the patient’s mental, physical, and emotional being. It also attacks the patient’s & their families’ financial resources. I decided to donate my birthday for a golf tournament to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.” Donate a birthday?! Hearing that brings a tear to the eye. You always hear someone donating time, money, but your birthday? That’s very inspiring.
McKinnies began spreading the word about . She along the assists of American Cancer Society, launched the first PuttAway Cancer event, in 2014. The event was showered with donations and an auctioned off Marco Belinelli (Spurs) jersey.
This year, they are raising money for scholarships to be awarded to cancer patients. “I just want to share with the world that you can’t let cancer stop you from achieving your dream. You have to live each day, and celebrate life. We truly want to inspire HOPE through giving.”
